You guys can’t possibly understand how much I cried when this episode aired.
When I saw this episode for the first time, I really just wanted to applaud the writers, because they did something that many history classes and well known works of literature tend to avoid: they allowed someone from the ‘opposing side’ to be good, and to allow us, as the viewers, to feel the full affect of this war that is tearing the world apart. This episode did for Avatar’s cause, what The Book Thief did for Germans who opposed the war in Germany. The son in this situation is just another young boy, looking for honor and bravery, and to impress his father, just like anyone on the good side. I feel that the son is a foil for Zuko, both looking to impress their fathers and earn glory. Though Zuko manages to achieve that goal while the son dies trying. I just think this was a profoundly respectable thing for the writers to do, to give the Fire Nation sympathizers, to show children that not everyone in the country fighting against you agrees. THERE ARE ALWAYS EXCEPTIONS.
